Frank Borman once said that “Exploration is really the essence of the human spirit.” Philosophically, this may not come out too precise as the word essence (essentia) points to the manner of being of a being (ens). The primary essence of men/women is to be, and so other verbs such as “explore” come only as secondary. As rational creatures though, travelling (to various places) has a crucial role in the larger travelling we do called life. It is through the explorations we do that we may find ourselves more: what we are, who we are, what we long for, and what we are made for. Furthermore, a bonus is given to us. In the process of our journey, we also find ourselves reflected in others. In the conversations, dialogues and trips we have together with others, we forge friendships that help us embrace life with greater vigor.
Happy to have this trip to Maribor, Slovenia with my classmates from the 2017 Summer School organized by the University of Graz, Austria.
